5 Facts You May Have Missed About Kisame’s Sword

Between all the cool swords we’ve seen in anime, like One Piece’s katanas and Dragon Ball’s longswords, the weapons of Naruto stand out for embracing over-the-top design and traditional ninja weapons at the same time; and Kisame’s sword is a prime example of this.

He might look a little like a monster from Demon Slayer, but Kisame Hoshigaki is actually the wielder of a legendary blade and a Seven Swordsmen member working with the Akatsuki clan. Of course, he couldn’t have become an ally of Itachi Uchiha without his Shark Skin sword, a blade with a rich history but not enough screen time. So, here are the things you may have missed about it.

1. Kisame’s Sword Is Named Samehada

Kisame Hoshigaki’s sword is called Samehada which literally translates to Shark Skin. While the sword looks nothing like a shark, the Samehada sword’s name is likely based on its predatory personality and horrifying history.

Because the sword had its own chakra, Kisame’s continual exposure to it resulted in him and the sword’s chakra coming into sync until they had identical chakra signatures. This linked the two swords with each other.

2. Samehada Is One of the Largest Swords in Naruto

Kisame’s Samehada is likely the second largest sword in Naruto, right next to Zabuza’s Kubikiribocho, a massive blade designed for taking off people’s heads. This one is not to be confused with the so-called Zabuza’s blade that appears in Naruto Shippuden as that sword is much smaller.

Samehada and Kubikiribocho are both claymore sized swords that are shown to almost dwarf their wielders.

3. Samehada Is Sentient

Samehada isn’t like the simple katana used by Sasuke Uchiha and is instead a sentient blade, meaning that it has its own consciousness and can make decisions regarding how it fights and who it fights for.

Unfortunately for Kisame, this meant that the sword could also decide to betray him. During his fight against Killer Bee, Samehada had consumed bits of Killer B’s chakra and decided it was so good, he would try to keep B alive so he could keep feeding off of him.

However, Samehada does seem to have a sense of conscience since he later appears to be sad about Kisame’s death.

4. Samehada Made a Debut in Akatsuki Hidan: Evil Flowers in Full Bloom

Samehada is among the few weapons from Naruto to appear in just about every piece of Naruto media, including Akatsuki Hidan: Evil Flowers in Full Bloom. The sword also appears in the Hidden Leaf Village Grand Sports Festival! OVA as well as the Road to Ninja movie.

5. Samehada Was Once Used by White Zetsu

Though Samehada is originally a sword passed down from generation to generation of Mizukage, it once made its way into the hands of White Zetsu, a mutated copy of Zetsu that came about as the result of the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

Conclusion

Naruto’s shinobi are best known for using kunai and ninja stars, but many of the show’s characters use swords, and few of them are as good as fighting with one than the duo of Samehada and Kisame. You can get your own Kisame sword replica as a small keychain that you can carry around with you at all times.
